Dot RU is 15 Today

Apr 07, 2009

Russian national domain .RU has already existed for 15 years after its registration in 1994. Of course, the Internet history in Russia began earlier, but the first official domain .SU (Soviet Union) was replaced by national domains for all the 15 republics of the former Soviet Union, including Russia.

The audience of the Internet users in Russia is about 40 million people now, which counts about 30% of our population. According to the number of internal domains .RU takes 6 or 7 place in the world-wide rating, informs us RU-CENTER, the biggest registration center of domain names in Russia.

The Internet is now not only a toy for a handful of selected few. It’s now a fixture in many homes and offices. The development plans include opening a national Cyryllic domain .ÐÔ.
